YOUR PET'S HEALTH ALWAYS COMES FIRST !
Breeding dogs with the aim of developing and preserving the characteristics of the breed requires strict discipline, selection and control. Even though Border Collies are generally a healthy breed, even they are not spared from certain inherent genetic disorders. If you are planning on buying a Border Collie it is advised to first be familiar with the genetic diseases and disorders of the breed. On the other hand, as a Kennel it is our job to do every single medical test related with possible genetic disease before breeding to insure the off springs will be completely healthy. This means that our dogs have regular medical check ups and are tested to eliminate the possibility of the new born pups, or even the future generations suffer from any inherent genetic diseases listed below.
Border Collies are a distinctly active breed, therefore there is no reason to point out that the presence of any of these disease will hamper the breeds quality of life greatly. Regardless of whether of not you plan to engage in agility contests or participate in dog shows, the care for your pets health and happiness should always be your top priority
CEA – Collie Eye Anomaly
Collie eye anomaly (CEA) is a congenital, inherited, bilateral eye disease of dogs, which affects the retina, choroid, and sclera. It can be a mild disease or cause blindness. CEA is caused by a simple autosomal recessive gene defect.
CL – Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis
Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (C.L.) in the Border Collie is a rare disease which affects the nerve cells of the body. It is also known as Storage Disease. It is an inherited disease. Once this gene is identified in Border Collies, we will be able to eliminate the disease from the breed in one or two generations.
TNS – Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome
Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS) is an autosomal recessive mutation affecting Border Collies. TNS was discovered fairly recently, in 1996, in Australia and New Zealand. The mutation causes the dog’s infection-fighting white blood cells to be “trapped” and not released from the bone marrow.
IGS – Imerslud-Grasberck Syndrome
Imerslund-Grasbeck Syndrome (IGS) or intestinal malabsorption of cobalamin in Border Collies. The vitamin B12 (cobalamin, Cbl) is a member of the B-group, water soluble vitamins. The intestinal malabsorption of cobalamin is a metabolic disorder that was described both in humans and animals.
MDR1 – Multidrug Resistence 1
Multidrug Resistance 1, also called MDR1, is an inherited condition affecting several breeds of dogs, especially herding dogs such as the Border Collie. The Mutation in the ABCB1 gene associated with MDR1 causes dysfunction of P-glycoprotein, which is responsible for removing certain drugs and toxins from the body.
EIC – Excerise Induced Hyperthermia
Border Collie Collapse. Border Collie collapse (BCC) is an episodic nervous system disorder that is triggered by strenuous exercise. This disorder has also been called exercise induced collapse (EIC), exercise induced hyperthermia, stress seizures and “the wobbles”.
DM – Degenerative Myelopathy
Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive disease of the spinal cord in older dogs. The disease has an insidious onset typically between 8 and 14 years of age. It begins with a loss of coordination (ataxia) in the hind limbs. The affected dog will wobble when walking, knuckle over or drag the feet.
SN – Sensory Neurophathy
Sensory Neuropathy Border Collie Type (SN) Sensory neuropathy Border Collie type is an inherited progressive neurological disorder which affects the Border Collie breed. Generally, neuropathy is a disease of the peripheral nerves. Disease of the sensory nerves causes the sensory neuropathy.
Raine Syndrome
Canine Dental Hypomineralization (Raine Syndrome) Canine dental hypomineralization or Raine Syndrom is a genetic disorder affecting the Border Collies. The disorder causes severe tooth wear resulting in pulpitis and requiring extraction of those teeth.
HD – Hip Dysplasia
In dogs, hip dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. It is a genetic (polygenic) trait that is affected by environmental factors.
ED- Elbow Dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia is a catchall term that describes inherited developmental abnormalities in a dog’s elbow joint.
Obesity
Obesity is the condition of being much too heavy for one’s height so that one’s health is affected. In other words, it means to be too overweight.
Also known as being fat. It is considered a disease.
